The museum is located on site, opposite the ant hill at the foot of which Dag Hammarskjold's body was found. It was opened by Dr Kenneth Kaunda in 1981.

It was opened by Dr Kenneth Kaunda in 1981. When Dag Hammarskjöld died, he willed his possessions to the farm, and the collection with us consists of about 700 objects - in addition to the 1400 of his books that are also here. In addition to the basic exhibition on the farm, we showed an exhibition called ′′ Camera has taught me to see ′′ - an exhibition with Dag Hammarskjöld's Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation. The Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation is a non-governmental organisation established in 1962 in memory of the second UN Secretary-General, which aims to advance dialogue and policy for sustainable development and peace. In his will, Dag Hammarskjöld left Backåkra to the Swedish Tourist Association. The Association transformed the farm into a museum where his private possessions and gifts from around the world were exhibited together with furniture and art from his apartment in New York, which Beskow had gone through and brought back.

The museum exhibits some remains of the tragic accident. The museum is also used for collecting materials and books on the life of Dag Hammarskjoeld and the role of the United Nations. Det behövs ett museum som uppmärksammar minnet av Dag Hammarskjöld och för nya generationer tydliggör hans betydelse för FN i ett kritiskt skede av världsorganisationens historia, det kalla kriget mellan USA och Sovjet. Den sydskånska gården Backåkra var vid Dag Hammarskjölds död hans enda fasta egendom i Sverige.
